Does nutrient timing REALLY matter ?

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

Improved Digestion & Nutrient Absorption

By picking the right food at the right time of day you're going to potentially benefit from far better digestion and therefore nutrient absorption. People always tend to under estimate the importance of gut performance, however when you think of it logically if you're breaking food down properly how can you possibly benefit from the nutrients to the fullest extent?

Arguably the most important time of the day to be selective about food sources from a digestive perspective is the pre and post workout window. You need nutrients which the body can readily breakdown and utilise.

Optimised Hormonal Response

However there are certain times of the day where our bodies will respond better to certain food choices. One of which could be when we come home stressed to the max after a day in the office, site, warehouse or whatever it is we have to do. Stress levels as we know increase our cortisol levels and it may be possible for those with a preference to have more carbs pre workout meal to help moderate this response!

Post workout the majority of us are insulin sensitive, due to the nature of our intense workouts - I’ll be going into this more in-depth with the team tonight, and addressing other areas where nutrient timing can benefit the most.

Elevated Energy Levels

By getting the timing of certain foods right you will inevitably enhance your energy levels, no question. For instance, in the morning consuming a breakfast which gradually elevates your blood sugar levels, improves satiety and gives you sustained energy is going to keep you feeling energised for longer. In contrast if you have a meal which lacks in slow release energy you will probably crash soon afterwards.

The same can be said for any other meal, especially your pre-workout meal.
